This fall and winter, there are lots of women’s hats in different motifs that are fashionable and head warming. The one style that has been particularly eye-catching has been the wide-brimmed hat. Lady Gaga, who is known for her outlandish get-ups, has been rocking a pink felt one for the last few weeks as part of an all pink outfit. She is not the only one to take note. Rag & Bone makes this wide-brimmed fedora for $195 in several colors but if you really want to splurge, check out this velvet floppy hat from Loro Piana which cost $1200. At the other end of the spectrum, this black wool floppy hat from Phase 3 is a looker for just $39.
Berets never really went out but they are definitely back in. It is not too hard to find a classic wool beret for under $20 but if you want one with a little more flare, Betmer and Kangol are two companies that make multi-colored, sequined, tweed and other berets that are anything but typical. The Australian designer, Helen Kaminski, has a fantastic hat portfolio including this adorable Mamara beret with a pom-pom. You might also be able to find original military berets on Ebay and in military surplus shops.
If you have a formal event, pillbox hats are a great way to go. First donned in the 1930’s purely as a fashion piece, Jackie Kennedy/Onassis made the wool version popular when she wore them more than 50 years ago and Princess Kate has brought them back into vogue, quite literally if you view the image in that magazine here.
Riding caps are also having their day. This double brimmed, tartan hat from Gucci exquisitely borrows British/Scottish themes and while at $585 it might not be suitable for a day at the stables, it has an understated elegance and can be worn casually or dressed up with an evening gown.
Knit hits have definitely come a long way since my childhood. Even children have more options these days than when I was younger but adults can have fun too, with pom poms, braids and flowers.
Keep in mind that hats make great gifts and the holidays are right around the corner but if you have only yourself in mind, don’t wait until the first snowstorm. The stores are already stocked so be prepared and make sure you have a hat to get you through any occasion this winter.
