Since Victorian times, women have worn white as a symbol of their virginity and even though our attitudes have changed about pre-marital sex, the idea of a “white wedding” has stuck. Yet that doesn’t mean bridal gowns can’t be sexy.

Winter hasn’t even begun but the 2016 spring collections are abounding with “illusion,” strapless dresses, sleeveless dresses, thigh high skirts and mini dress. Yes, I am still talking about bridal wear.

Illusion Sleeves

Translucent illusion has been trendy for a few years but it seems as if just a little bit more gets revealed each spring. Some designers have incorporated it into the sleeves or neck but others, such as Reem Acra, have gone all out making it look very classy. Acra also designed this dress with a very low-scooped neckline that at one time was considered risqué even for a bathing suit! Times have changed.

Keyhold neckilnes are also big. Some are very subtle, indicating no more than a flap opening while others leave a lot less to the imagination. Sleeveless gowns are not new but there seems to be more creativity with satin bodices, lace and once again, the neckline.

Usually, not as much attention is paid to the skirt but Mira Zwillinger and others have championed the thigh high slit. Tasteful, it may or may not be practical for late night dancing, but it is a stunning look for spring and summer weddings. Not least, there is the mini wedding dress.  It doesn’t need to be ornate. The hemline says enough!

Brides to be who want to be adventurous but not show off that much skin have lots of options, too. Flower patterned lace is as popular as ever. Oversized skirts don’t need to look puffy. In fact, they can be tailored to contour a woman’s shape, giving no more or no less than teasing hint of what lies beneath. And if you really want to go all out, dresses with feathers are going to be huge!

It’s almost 2016 and if you or someone you know is shopping for an upcoming nuptial, there are plenty of ways to say “I do” in style.
