Women took to wearing ties with almost as much enthusiasm as men when they went mainstream in the 1930’s. They were usually reserved for the daytime hours, where those who wanted to appear fashionable wore them to the workplace. Throughout the 40’s they remained pretty popular. Women’s neckties had a resurgence in the late 70’s, thanks in part to Diane Keaton whose iconic character, “Annie Hall,” set off a whole new look for women that included khakis, vest and a loose tie. Since then, the female tie has never gone away.
In the last 40 years, ties have become even more commonplace for women. To be fashionable the rest of the outfit has to play up the look and convey some femininity. This can be done with a lower cut blouse and actually wearing the tie under the blouse so it falls right into the deep v-spot. Or try a colorful tie with a fitted suit that shows off your curves. For fall, a lot of large plaids are being shown. I love mixing and matching different patterns, so a dotted or print tie with a tailored plaid vest or suit jacket is both feminine and fashion-forward. These are just a few ideas. But be creative. If you are a woman and want to sport a tie, think about adding a little flair or feminine appeal.
Here is a good article from The Gloss on some stylish ways of knotting ties. These are some fun options that add a chicness instead of a typical knot.
