Diamonds might last forever but sometimes rhinestones are all you need. There was a time when costume jewelry was just a cheap imitation of the real thing but it has come into its own with designers such as Alexander McQueen and his famous skull collection that can be seen on many a famous actress or model.

I’ve noticed, especially among millennials, that what is now usually called “fashion” jewelry is worn at all occasions so I asked Holly Granofsky, founder of The Social Sparkle, a jewelry consultation company, about its rising popularity. “For the younger generation it is not a long term interest to have fine jewelry.” She cites the success of companies such as Rent a Runway as examples of a changed attitude towards permanence, at least insofar as clothes and accessories are concerned.

There are numerous advantages to “investing” in fashion jewelry starting of course with the smaller investment. Also, fashion jewelry is extremely versatile and can add a fashionable/cool element to many an outfit. Lucite, vintage rings, chunky necklaces or layering chain necklaces, completely change a t-shirt and jeans into a fashion forward outfit to go out in. The same pieces with a dressy outfit can actually tone it down and make it look more funky and casual.

Fine jewelry made from precious metals and gemstones may never die but in today’s world you can look like haute couture without having to spend a fortune. The key is to put together a good look and the versatility of fashion jewelry is a big part of this fashion puzzle.
