With the weather on the not-so-warm side for many of us, it can become a challenge to create a variety that isn’t just coat, coat, coat all day and night.
This is where the art of layering can come in handy, a way of keeping warm while also creating some visual variety and flair. Here are some of the key components:
Pay Attention to the Materials
The key here is to create some variety of fabrics and textures. Too bulky and uniform, and you won’t look and feel your best, but with the right amount of variation, you can pull off something that looks interesting, has depth, and also keeps you warm.
Don’t Forget About Accessories
Scarves, belts, jewelry – keep it in mind when putting together an outfit. Belts help pull together – literally – the bulky nature of winter wear. Scarves can help splash some color. Accessories help create a feeling of completeness to your look.
Limit Your Color Palette Per Outfit
Colors? Love them, but when it comes to layering, it can be easy to layer color upon color upon print upon print and end up looking too busy. When designing your outfit, stick to a limited color palette (think black-and-white, warm, cool, etc.) to avoid creating something that looks overwhelming, haphazard, or busy. (You can layer, and mix and match patterns and colors, but it should be intentional choices).
Have Fun With It
Most importantly, have fun with it. Are there guidelines of what tends to look best? Of course, but does that mean you should only stick with those things only? Of course not! Experiment with ideas. Try things out. See what works with you and your own personal style. Rules were made to be broken by those courageous enough to go for it.
