Let’s Not Forget Men’s Swimwear

Until the 1930’s, most men wore a one-piece tube suit in the water because exposing their chest was considered indecent. However, when the B.V.D. Company hired Johnny Weismuller, aka “Tarzan,” to promote its swimsuits that changed. Weismuller, an Olympic champion swimmer who was the Michael Phelps of the time, talked his sponsors into losing the top and there has been pretty much no looking back.

Men’s swimsuits have continued to change with the times. Looser fitting trunks made their first appearance in the 40’s. Bright colors and patterns were en vogue in the 50’s and psychedelic influenced designs took hold by the late 60’s. The 70’s ushered in a range of cuts and styles, with tight skivvies being a particular favorite, and by the 90’s, boarding shorts became the rage.

This summer, I’ve noticed people wearing everything from all eras. The one style that seems to be most popular is the drawstring swimming trunk however even these come in different lengths and a huge variety of patterns. This checked suit from Cos is pretty tame but at the same time retro cool, and classy. On the other hand, if you want to attract some attention, be a patriot with this American flag boardshort ($46) from O’Neill Murca.

This safari print from Gant by Michael Bastian ($76) reminds me of old school basketball shorts with its shorter cut and trim. Even more revealing is this Zehui brief, yet it is every bit as stylish.

Bringing it back to where it began, one-piece tube like suits have made a small comeback. Of course they were used in professional swim races until recently until most were banned because the fabric gave an unfair advantage but from a purely fashion point of view, I think some guys would look great in a piece such as this compression suit ($110).

The nice thing is that no matter what you wear to the beach or pool, chances are you won’t get any strange looks, unless you opt for the Borat mankini, so while a bathing suit says as much about your style as the clothes you wear on the street, don’t stress about it too much and be sure to enjoy your summer.
